The Deccan Chargers entered the cricketing arena with a war cry on Tuesday as their jubilant captain, V.V.S. Laxman, said that quality cricket is great entertainment in itself and does not need any Bollywood star to promote it. The skipper’s comment was given added impetus by the thunderous drumming which accompanied the colourful launch of Deccan Chargers, the the Deccan Chronicle IPL team for Hyderabad, at Novotel in Hitex on Tuesday evening.

“I think ultimately IPL is a cricket tournament and people will come to see great cricketers playing,” said Laxman. “With my colleagues I’ll try to play the best cricket we can. That’s the biggest entertainment for a cricket fan.”
The team would be represented by a charging bull, signifying strength, power and aggression while the red and gold bands on the flag stand for dominance and victory. Deccan Chargers have already acquired a fan following, going by the enthusiastic messages scrawled over the board. ‘Blast the rest,’ read one, ‘Charge your way through, Deccan,’ said another.

Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist of Australia said in a video message that he was very excited at being the vice-captain of the Deccan Chargers. While thanking the Deccan Chronicle for “setting the team up in a professional manner,” Gilchrist said he was “looking forward to forming a great relationship with the passionate fans.” Laxman also lauded the efforts of Deccan Chronicle in getting Hyderabad a team in the IPL. “Cricket is not only passion or religion but karma; it’s part of everyone’s lives,” he said. “Over the next few years we will have more youngsters from this part of the country representing India.”

“Deccan Chronicle group has always believed in promoting sports including cricket and the Deccan Chargers is our way of contributing to this vision. We are confident that Deccan Chargers would inspire a whole new generation of young cricketers in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa to build on their talent and reach greater heights,” said Mr T. Venkattram Reddy, chairman, Deccan Chronicle. “We will always and play with this spirit,” said J. Krishnan, CEO of Deccan Chargers.

He also echoed Laxman’s words when he said there won’t be any film stars on the ground. “We’re talking about cricket here,” he added. “Our team is good enough to entertain the spectators. I don’t think we need any film stars to woo the crowd.” And Laxman added in good measure, “My and my team will go all out to entertain you.” “We will take cricket to the grassroots in Hyderabad, Andhra and Orissa by setting up academies of international standard which will groom youngsters and help them realise their dreams,” said Mr Krishnan.

Earlier, the show began with dynamic drum beats as the Hyderabad Cricket Association president and state labour minister, Mr G. Vinod, unfurled the team flag. It was interspersed by dances by a Latina trio and Sameera Reddy, not to forget the foot-tapping drumming by Taufeeq Qureshi and his band called Mumbai Stamps. Skipper Laxman and Coach Robin Singh were visibly proud. “I’m in an enviable position,” said the captain. “Any cricketer of my team can play at any position. So the team management can decide the batting order.”

Robin Singh was also happy to see so many match winners in one team. “I’ve played with some of them and have coached others,” he said. “It’s going to be tremendous experience.” And there need not be any anxiety about the Aussies in the team gelling with the Indians after the recent tempestuous tour. “I know Gilly (Adam Gilchrist) and Symmo (Andrew Symonds) very well,” said Laxman. “They are not only great cricketers, they are good human beings. Forget about sledging and concentrate on cricket.”

The entire squad of Deccan Chargers was also announced on the occasion. They include: V.V.S. Laxman (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi, Chaminda Vaas, Scott Styris, Chamara Silva, Nuwan Zoysa, R.P. Singh, Rohit Sharma, N. Arjun Yadav, Dwaraka Ravi Teja, Pragyan Prayish Ojha, Doddapaneni Kalyankrishna, P. Vijay Kumar, Y. Venu Gopal Rao, Halhadhar Das, Sanjay Bangar and Sarvesh Kumar.

The launch of the Hyderabad IPL team, Deccan Chargers, was indeed a grand affair. The programme began on time, at 8 pm sharp. While the cricketers were indeed the cynosure of the evening, (Adam Gilchrist's video message was a big hit with the locals, especially the ladies who were seen drooling over the cricketer). The HICC hall at Novotel was packed with formally attired guests, most of whom were prominent personalities from different fields like business, politics, and of course sports. The Tollywood brigade was out in full force and included actors like Jagapathy Babu, Venkat, Raja, Qayum and even producer Suresh Gopi. Compere Mandira Bedi's high energy act set the groove for a smashing evening of performances by Flamenco dancers, sizzler Sameera Reddy, who set the stage on fire.

Cricket and politics were the topics of discussion around the top tables where the Who's Who of Hyderabad cricket were seated. While the players talked about how the team can pack a punch in the upcoming IPL, the discussion in adminstrators' circles revolved around elections to the Hyderabad Cricket Association scheduled in May. The leaders of the two main groups - former Indian spinners Shivlal Yadav and Arshad Ayub spent time thinking how they could turn things around. For the P3s, this was one more occasion to make a fashion statement. Everyone was here. Bobby Sunny, Sanjeev and Sikha Gupta, Kunal and Priyanka, Masih, Zia and Sana Ansari, Huma-Asad, Malini-Mohan Alexander, Anu-Kirti and many more. Guys were heard drooling over Sameera's sizzling performance while many present were impressed with Mandira's ‘cute' haircut.

With the best of cricket, politics, fashion and food coming under one platform, it was indeed a night to remember.

Deccan Chargers News: Deccan Chargers promise good IPL entertainment

V.V.S. Laxman, the captain of Deccan Chargers, the Hyderabad team in the Indian Premier League, feels excited to lead the side which has international stars like Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs and Shahid Afridi.

Confident of a good show in the tournament, he promised good entertainment for the fans by his team, a franchise of English daily Deccan Chronicle.

The name, logo, flag and website of the team were launched at a glittering function here Tuesday night amidst drum beats and colourful dances by Bollywood actress Sameera Reddy and a troupe of Casino girls.

"It is a huge honour to lead the side. I am very excited. We have a balanced side," the stylish batsman told the gathering at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).

Though not a regular face in the national side for one-day internationals, Laxman hopes that the Twenty20 format would prove a real entertainer. "It is the most exciting thing to happen since Kerry Packer Series in early 1970s," he said echoing the views expressed by his deputy Gilchrist in a recorded message.

Later, talking to media persons, Laxman said he was yet to decide the batting line-up. He was asked about the position he would be batting at as the team has many hard-hitters like Gilchrist, Symonds, Gibbs and Afridi.

The captain is also confident that he would face no problems in handling players like Symonds, who was involved in many a spat with Indian players during the recent series in Australia.

"As Gilchrist rightly said, there will only be a boundary line and no boundaries between players. The players from different countries will gel with each other," he said.

"I am happy to have these two amazing cricketers and the match-winning players," he said referring to the two Australians.

Robin Singh, the coach of Deccan Chargers, also does not see any problem in handling the players. "They are thorough professionals. There should be no problems," he said.

Though none of the foreign players turned up for the event, some Indian players including Rohit Sharma were introduced to the gathering.

The team also has players like Chaminda Vaas, Chamara Silva and Nuwan Zoysa of Sri Lanka, Scott Styris of New Zealand and India's national player R.P. Singh besides some local youngsters.

Earlier, the team's logo, a charging bull, was unveiled. "Bull signifies strength, power and aggression," said J. Krishnan, president and CEO of Deccan Chargers.

Minister for Labour and Employment and president of Hyderabad Cricket Association G. Vinod handed over the team's flag to Laxman.

"The red colour in the flag stands for boldness, aggression and dominance while the gold is a divine colour and signifies fortune and victory," said Krishnan.

"Deccan Chronicle is committed to growth of sports, especially cricket. So when the opportunity to bid for this unique tournament came we went after it. We had a well thought out strategy in terms of who will be in the team," he said.

The largest-circulated English daily in Andhra Pradesh wants to take cricket to the grassroots level in the catchments area of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

"We will take the game to college and school level and set up international level academies to help talented youngsters to come up," Krishnan said.

Deccan Chargers News:DECCAN CHARGERS : PLAYERS

Deccan Chargers

Players

The Chargers were among the most aggressive bidders during the first Indian Premier League player auction. The franchise added a lot of explosive power in batting by acquiring some renown big hitters like Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Shahid Afridi, Scott Styris and Herschelle Gibbs. In addition to all these players, the franchise also includes the Indian test player VVS Laxman, who is a Hyderabad local. They are also employing the services of well known pacers R.P. Singh, Nuwan Zoysa and Chaminda Vaas. It's been announced by the franchise that Laxman will captain the side during the tournament.[2][3]
VVS Laxman was supposed to be the Icon Player for Chargers, but this meant that the players mentioned above could not be bought as Icon Player's earn 15% more than the next highest earner in the team. However, VVS Laxman relinquished his Icon Player Status, and instead of earning $1 million like other Icon players he earns $375,000, which allows the team to buy the big names and still remain under the salary cap.[4]
